Consequently, then, as we have occasion, we are working for the good of all, yet especially for the family of faith (Galatians 6:10, Concordant Version (CV)).

Paul presented believers as being family – “the family of faith.” In the book of I Thessalonians Paul describes his relationship with the saints in family terms, as that of a:

Gentle Mother

But we became gentle in your midst, – as though, a nursing mother, had been cherishing her own children (2:7, Rotherham).

Concerned Father

Even as you are aware how we were to each one of you, as a father to his own children, consoling and comforting you and attesting unto you (2:11, Concordant).

Loving Brother

We, brothers, having been for a short time separated from you in bodily presence, though not in heart, endeavored all the more earnestly, with intense longing, to see you face to face. (2:17, Weymouth).

The saints were not social acquaintances to Paul. They were not “parishioners.” Paul did not view his relationship with them as a religious one. He regarded them as family – God’s family – his family!

The same apostle who had exulted in the fact that “all they which dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus” (Acts 19:10), lived to pen the sad lament, “This thou knowest, that all they which are in Asia be turned away from me” (II Timothy 1:15). Then, taking a still wider view of the condition of the Church, he indicted the solemn forecast, “But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived” (II Timothy 3:13).
